The first clip replaces the black area in the image, and the second clip replaces the white areas in the image. If you use a grayscale image for the mask, pixels containing 50% or more gray convert to black, and pixels containing less than 50% gray convert to white.</p><div class="anchorc"><img src="images/ae_22.gif" alt="Image serves as mask to create transition" height="75" width="501" /></div><div class="caption">Image serves as mask to create transition</div></ol><p class="headstep">To use an image as a transition mask:</p><ol><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="1">In the Effects window, open the Video Transitions folder, and then open the Special Effect folder.</li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="2">Drag the Image Mask transition from the Special Effect folder to the cut between clips in the Timeline window. </li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="3">In the Image Mask Settings dialog box, click Select Image.</li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="4">Locate and select the image file you want to use as a transition mask, and click Open. The image appears in the Image Mask Settings dialog box.</li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="5">Click OK. To preview the transition, drag the current-time indicator through the transition in the Timeline window.</li></ol><p class="headstep">To change the image used for an Image Mask transition:</p><ol><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="1">Double-click the transition in the Timeline window to open the Effect Controls window.</li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="2">In the Effect Controls window, click the Custom button.</li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="3">In the Image Mask Settings dialog box, click Select Image.</li><li class="numberstep" type="1" value="4">Locate and select the image file you want to use, and click Open.
